The statue has very light paint loss
The statue measures approx 6 inch high
On one side of the statue is marked Zwolle
On the other side its marked Volgens Bartjens

Born in 1569 in Amsterdam Willem Bartjens opened in the year 1591
a private school in the Pijlsteeg in Amsterdam
Here he taught in the languages Dutch and French, reading, writing, religion, history and arithmetic
With his experience at this school in 1604, he wrote arithmetic book "The Cijfferinghe Mr. William Bartjens"
A bestseller for that time, given the rise of Amsterdam as a major trading city in Europe
This arithmetic was mainly geared to the education of merchants
In 1618 the family made Bartjens consisting of father William, mother Maritgen and eight children,
the big step from Amsterdam to Zwolle, where William Bartjens was assigned the function of city schoolteacher
In his Zwolse period, around 1633, he published his "Renewed Cijfferinghe"
Identical to the first edition, but with expansion of more calculation rules for several professions
His "Cijfferinghe" has greatly contributed to the Dutch mathematics education in particular, our merchants
William Bartjens lived in present Fraterhouse, Praubstraat 14 and taught at the French School in the city
In the Zwolle district Assendorp his name in several ways honored.
There is a street, Willem Bartjens Street and also a school,
Willem Bartjens School named after this city schoolteacher.
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the accounting books are revised and reprinted many times.
Until the forties of the 19th century there have been several books published Bartjens.
The last edition dates from the year 1839.

William Bartjens became 69 years and died in 1638 in Zwolle. He was then employed as a schoolteacher
